This tool is available as standalone software and in conjunction with the programs Image Converter, Text Converter or Filelist Creator, each of this applications are available in German and English. The File Renamer can accessed through the menu "Tools" in each of this applications. The File Renamer as standalone version do not need an installation and can be used without installation. The independent tool can be downloaded here.

Rename Files/Folders

First, the files and folders to be renamed, have to be added to the list at the top of the window. The easiest way to do this is to drag the files and folders from a folder on your computer to the list. Alternatively, you can also use the button "Open Folder" to scan a folder for files.

With the two options "Add Files" and "Add Folders" in the upper part of the window, you specify what is done with the elements you add to the list. For instance, if you drag a directory on the tool, depending on this settings, the content of the folder, the folder itself or both will be adde to the file list.

If you have added the files and folders, you have to tell the program, how these files should be renamed. The right place for this is the middle of the main window, where a mask for the files have to be set. This mask can either contain arbitrary strings or constants. There are four constants used in the program (you see them under the mask box), which are replaced when renaming the files with that, what they stand for. For example, the constant %name% is replaced with the old name of the file. If you use only this constant as a mask, the file is not renamed. If you add strings to this mask, for example 1%name%1, the file will be renamed with the old file name and a 1 before and after the old file name. Explanations of the other constants, you can find under the point functions.

In addition to this constants, it is also possible to search for strings in the file name and/or the file extension and replace this strings with others (or nothing to delete the string). This can be set in the box under the mask.

If all settings are made as desired, you should have a look at the preview at the bottom of the window. Just select a file in the list, to display the preview of the new file name. If you are satisfied with your settings, simply click on the button "Rename". This will automatically rename all files in the list according to the settings and the list of files will be updated.
