The Vietnamese Alphabet

Here you can see all letters that occur in the Vietnamese alphabet. The headings of each column are showing all basic letters of the Latin alphabet in bold. In the first row of the table, there are the letters from the Latin alphabet, which are also used in Vietnamese. Underneath, all in Vietnamese occurring forms derived from the basic Latin letters are listed.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
ABCDE(F)GHI(J)KLMNOPQRSTUV(W)XY(Z)
Ă  Ð   Ì          Ũ   Ý
      Í          Ư
À   Ê        Ô
Á           Ơ
à  É   Ĩ

The Vietnamese alphabet (called Chữ Quốc Ngữ - Script of the National Language) has 82 letters. It contains of all 26 basic letters of the Latin alphabet and is supplemented by 56 diacritics. The alphabet is based on the Portuguese version of the Latin alphabet.

Written Vietnamese can easily be recognized by the large number of diacritical marks (often two on one letter), these diacritical marks are listed in the frequency table, but in the table all letters with more than one diacritical mark have been omitted for the sake of clarity.

The letters F, J, W and Z occur only in loanwords and are therefore enclosed in parentheses in the table. Those letters are not part of the official Vietnamese alphabet.
