Settings
On this page you will find an overview of all options from the settings dialog of the PasswordGenerator with an explanation of the respective function. You reach the dialog described here via the "Settings" menu. An explanation of the functions of other program parts of the PasswordGenerator can be found in the function overview.
General > Character Classes
With the settings in this category you can specify exactly which characters belong to which character class and thus which characters are used if you have selected the corresponding character class as the basis for your password generation. You are completely free to remove or add any characters from the character classes you want.
- Uppercase Letters: With this field the characters of the character class "uppercase letters" can be defined. If you have activated the "uppercase letters" option in the main window, the characters defined here will be used for your password. By default, the characters A to Z are used as uppercase letters. You can remove or add any characters you want. Also Unicode characters.
- Lowercase Letters: With this field the characters of the character class "lowercase letters" can be defined. If you have activated the "lowercase letters" option in the main window, the characters defined here will be used for your password. By default, the characters a to z are used as lowercase letters. You can remove or add any characters you want. Also Unicode characters.
- Digits: With this field the characters of the character class "digits" can be defined. If you have activated the "digits" option in the main window, the characters defined here will be used for your password. By default, the characters 0 to 9 are used as digits. You can remove or add any characters you want. Also Unicode characters.
- Special Characters: With this field the characters of the character class "special characters" can be defined. If you have activated the option "special characters" in the main window, the characters defined here will be used for your password. By default, the characters "! ? . : , _ ( ) { } [ ] / \ % @ # $ ~ - +" are used as special characters. You can remove or add any characters you want. Also Unicode characters.
General > Minimum Number of Characters per selected Character Class
The options in this category allow you to specify whether a certain minimum number of characters from each selected character class should appear in the generated password. You can leave the influence of the character classes completely to chance, you can force to include the same number of characters from each character class in your password, or you can determine individually for each character class how many characters from the corresponding class should be used. You only have to keep in mind that the sum of all minimum numbers can not be greater than the desired password length, otherwise not all of the required characters can be accommodated in your password.
- Arbitrarily: If you select this option, you do not specify any minimum number of characters from each character class to be used in your password. Since the selection of characters is purely random in this case, this option may mean that not all selected character classes will appear in your password. Chance can even have the effect that only one of four selected character classes will be represented in your password. If you would like to impede this, please select another option.
- At least one character from each character class: If this option is activated, it is ensured that each selected character class will appear at least once in your password. So only passwords that contain at least one character from each selected character class are created.
- At least two characters from each character class: By activating this option you ensure that two characters from each selected character class are included in your password. If you have selected all four character classes, your password must be at least eight characters long in order to be able to accommodate all the required characters in the password.
- Custom: With this option you can freely determine how many characters from each character class must appear in the password. You can set an individual minimum value for each of the four character classes (uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters). If you use the value "0", the use of the character class in question is optional and may appear or be absent depending on chance. Of course, also with this option, the sum of all minimum values must not exceed the length of the generated password, otherwise the requirement cannot be met.
These options are only available in the desktop version of the password generator. In the app, please use the option "Passwords must contain at least one character of each selected character class" instead.
General > Options
- Passwords must contain at least one Character of each selected Character Class: If this option is enabled, passwords will be created containing at least one character from each selected character class. If this option is not active, randomness may cause that not all character classes occur in a created password. This option is only available in the Android app. In the desktop version there are instead the options available that you can find under "General > Minimum number of characters per selected character class".
- Use each character only once / do not use characters for multiple times: If this option is active, the password generator ensures that no character appears twice or more often in the generated password. When using this function, the character set defined via the character classes must therefore contain at least as many characters as the length of the generated password should be.
- Reduce the probability of two identical characters in a row: This option allows you to reduce the chance of two identical characters appearing in a row in the generated password.
- Exclude similar looking Characters: If this option is enabled, the similar-looking characters O, 0, 1, I and l are excluded from the generation of passwords, regardless of whether these characters have been defined in the character classes or not. With this option, it is thus possible to quickly exclude the corresponding characters without changing the character classes.
- Create new Password when clicking on "Clipboard": If this option is activated, a new password is automatically created each time the "Clipboard" button in the main window is clicked and this password is copied to the clipboard. This allows you to create a new password with just one click as well as to copy this password to the clipboard. If this option is deactivated, the currently displayed password is copied to the clipboard when clicking on the "Clipboard" button.
- Save created passwords in the History: If this option is activated, all created passwords are saved in the history, which can be accessed via the menu "File" > "History". More information can be found on the page about the History function.
