Settings
On this page you will find an overview of all options from the settings dialog of the WordCreator with an explanation of the respective function. You reach the dialog described here via the "Settings" menu. An explanation of the functions of other program parts of the WordCreator can be found in the function overview.
You can show the settings via the menu "Settings" or by clicking on the button "Settings" in the main window.
Creator
- Creator > Writing of created Words: At this point, you can determine the uppercase or lowercase writing of the created words. Using the option "Like in syllable list", the writing will not be changed compared to the writing in the syllable list. Apart from that, it is possible to write all characters uppercase, lowercase or randomly mixed independent from the definition in the list or to always write the first letter uppercase and the rest of each word lowercase.
- Creator > Write words next to each other: If this option is activated, the created words will be written after each of the into one line. If this option is not active, the words will be written under each other. Additionally, you can define a character that will be written between the words in the case that the words are written next to each other. By default this is a space.
- Creator > Insert line break between the creation passes: If this option is activated, an additional line break is inserted into the result between the individual creation passes (click on "Create"). For example, if you create 5 words per pass and output the words one below the other, the generated words will appear as packages with 5 words each in the result (separated by empty lines). If you output the words next to each other, you will get one line for each pass with the words generated in this pass.
- Creator > Use character for line break: If this option is active, the characters defined in the box are used as line break when creating words. By default, this is the character sequence "/nl", standing for new line. Because in the syllable list, each line is standing for a new syllable, otherwise it would not be possible to also create random line breaks.
- Creator > Clear list before creating new words: If this option is active, each time you click on "Create", the list of already created words will be cleared. If the option is disabled, the new words are just written under the existing words.
- Creator > Readability > Create readable words: If this option is active, the WordCreator is trying to create readable words. In the pre-settings, "readable" means that consonants and vowels have to alternate within a word. If the option is not active, each syllable is allowed to appear after every other syllable. Using the button "Edit Rules", you can specify your own differing rules for readability.
- Creator > Readability > Always allow syllables for which there are no rules defined: Problems with creating readable words can erase in case that the syllable list contains syllables for which there are no rules defined. You can activate this option that such syllables are allowed to appear at every position within a word. Otherwise, those syllables will lead to an error message that using the current syllable list, it is not possible to create readable words.
- Creator > Readability > Use every syllable only once per word: When this option is activated, the same syllable will only be used for one time within a word, so a syllable cannot occur two times or more within a word. If the option is not active, a syllable is allowed to occur several times per word.
- Creator > Readability > Edit rules: At this point, you can define your own rules for readability. A new window opens in which you can see and edit the default rules. Click on OK to apply the new rules or on Cancel to discard them. How to create own rules and what to take into account when writing them, you can learn on the introduction page regarding readable words.
- Creator > Readability > Reset Rules to Default: With this button, you can reset the changed readability rules to the pre-settings. This overwrites possibly defined own rules. The presetting means that each consonant must follow a vowel and vice versa.
Syllable List
- Syllable List > Add single letters/two-piece syllables (digrams)/three-piece syllables (trigrams): With the menu "Syllable Lists" you are able to create random lists or to load syllable lists from languages. With this option, you can specify whether only single letters or also digrams or trigrams should be added or created.
- Syllable List > Delete old syllable list before adding: Activate this option to ensure that the box with the used syllables is emptied before adding the new syllables. If this function is deactivated, the new syllables will be added to the existing list.
- Syllable List > Custom Random List: Via the menu "Syllable Lists > Custom Random List", it is possible to create a random syllable list. Here you can define the characters with which the function is executed.
- Syllable List > Save Syllable List with Settings: If this option is activated, the syllable list from the main window is stored together with the settings. With this function, it is possible to save profiles including syllable lists or to make the program directly start with the recently used list.
Counter
- Counter > What should be counted: At this point, you can define what the counter should count. It is possible to make the counter count single characters (letters), real syllables, entire words or character combinations. Character combinations may be digrams, trigrams, quadgrams, quintgrams or hexgrams. That are characters that are standing behind each other. For example, when counting the 3 pairs (trigrams) from the word "WORD", the result would be "WOR" and "ORD".
- Counter > Count blanks as letters: If this function is activated, also spaces will be counted. Otherwise, spaces will be ignored and only used as delimiter between words.
- Counter > Count position within a word: If this function is deactivated, all characters and letters are counted independent from their position within a word. You can activate the option in order to also get information about the position. Example: We would like to count the word "TEST". In case the option is deactivated, the result would be 2x T, 1x E and 1x S. If the function is active, the result would be 1x T at position 1, 1x E at position 2, 1x S at position 3 and 1x T at position 4.
- Counter > Reset counter before each counting process: If this option is active, the former results of the counter are reseted when starting counting for another time (clicking on the "Count" button). If this option is disabled, the old result of the former countings are kept and the new result is added to the old one. With this, it is possible to include more than one texts into the counting. If you click with the right mouse button on the result, you can select "Reset Counter" from the context menu in order to reset the results manually.
- Counter Characters > The following characters will be excluded from counting: If this option is activated, the characters defined here will not be counted (negative list). By default, some special characters and numbers are defined here, so that in usual texts only the letters will be considered and counted. You can write or remove arbitrary characters from or to the field or you can deactivate the entire option in order to count each character from your text.
- Counter Characters > Only the following characters will be counted: Using this option, it is possible to define a positive list of characters that should be counted. All of the other characters will be ignored. You can write arbitrary characters into the field and you can remove arbitrary characters from the field. In order to add or remove common groups of characters quickly, there are some options behind the box with which you can edit or remove Latin letters, umlauts, Cyrillic letters, Greek letters, Georgic letters or digits with one click. Just activate or deactivate the appropriate option for this.
- Counter Characters > Only count characters matching this regular expression: If you do not want to count or consider all characters from your text but only parts of the text, you can here specify a regular expression limiting the scope of the counter. Let us have a look at an example. Assuming we have the text "ACD
F" and we would only like to count the characters between < and >, we can use the regular expression <(.*?)> for this. You can set the option "In the regular expression, characters to be counted are within a bracket" to specify whether the complete match of the regular expression should be counted or only the part within brackets. In the example above, the difference would be whether B and E would be the match (within brackets) or and (the entire regular expression). With activating the option "Show Matches", a window containing the matches is displayed before showing the results. With this, you can easily control whether the regular expression is finding what you are searching for. - Counter Characters > Combinations of Letters > Combine lowercase and uppercase letters (a -> A): Activate this function to combine lowercase and uppercase letters. This means, that "a" as well as "A" will be counted as "A" in the result. If the option is deactivated, "a" and "A" will be considered and counted as different characters.
- Counter Characters > Combinations of Letters > Count alternative writing instead of umlaut (Ä -> AE): If this option is active, instead of Ä, Ö and Ü, the letters AE, OE and UE will be counted. If this option is disabled, Ä, Ö and Ü are counted as individual letters.
- Counter Characters > Combinations of Letters > Count equivalent letter instead of accents (Á -> A): If this option is active, variations of a letter will be counted as the corresponding letter. For example, instead of À, Á, Â, Ã, Ä, Å, Æ, Ǻ, Ā, Ă or Ą just A will be counted and instead of Ś, Ŝ, Ş, Š or Ș just S. If this option is disabled, all accents and variations will be counted as independent letters.
- Counter Characters > Combinations of Letters > Count double S instead of capital ß when combining uppercase and lowercase letters (ß -> SS): If this option as well as the option "Combine uppercase and lowercase letters" are both activated, each little ß is treated and counted as two S. So there is no conversion into a capital ẞ and no corresponding count.
- Counter Characters > Combinations of Letters > Always count small ß - also when combining uppercase and lowercase letters: If this option is activated, each occurrence of a small ß is also counted as a small ß. Even if the option "Combine uppercase and lowercase letters" is active, all other lowercase letters will be converted into their equivalent capital letters, but the small ß remains small and will not be converted into a capital ẞ.
- Counter Output > Sorting: Here you can specify, how the result list should be sorted. It is possible to sort according to letters or frequency in ascending or descending order. Additionally, it is possible to list the matches according to their occurence in the text.
- Counter Output > Components of the Table: Here you can specify which columns (absolute number of occurrences, relative frequency of occurrences or total number) should contain your table.
- Counter Output > Components of the Table > Always add characters from "Only the following characters will be counted": In the options of the counter, you can define a positive list of characters that should be counted. Here you can define whether the characters defined there should be written to the result list in each case, even if the corresponding character does not appear in the counted text. In this case, those characters are listed with a frequency of 0.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Minimum length for items to be included in list: At this point, you can define a lower limit for the length of elements in your list. 1 means that all elements that are found will be included into the list. If you set a limit of 3, elements like INC and INCI will be included but not I or I.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Minimum frequency for items to be included in list: Here you can define a lower limit for the frequency. Using 0.00 all elements found will be written to the result. Accordingly, with 1.5 only the elements with a higher or equal frequency compared to 1.5. With the option "Minimum frequency is specified percentage (not absolute)" you can determine whether your specified number is the absolute number of elements or percentage.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Minimum frequency is specified percentage (not absolute): With this option, you can determine whether your specified number under "Minimum frequency for items to be included in list" is the absolute number of elements or percentage.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Only include items starting with these characters: If you only want to add elements to the list that start with one or more specific characters, you can specify these characters here. If you activate the option "Interpret as Regular Expression" under the input fields, you can also use a regular expression in this field. In addition, the option "Case Sensitive" is available for this specification.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Only include items ending with these characters: If you only want to add elements to the list that end with one or more specific characters, you can specify these characters here. If you activate the option "Interpret as Regular Expression" under the input fields, you can also use a regular expression in this field. In addition, the option "Case Sensitive" is available for this specification.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Only include items containing these characters: If you only want to add elements to the list that contain one or more specific characters, you can specify these characters here. If you activate the option "Interpret as Regular Expression" under the input fields, you can also use a regular expression in this field. In addition, the option "Case Sensitive" is available for this specification.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Case Sensitive: If you activate this option, the specifications from the fields "Only include items starting with these characters", "Only include items ending with these characters" and "Only include items containing these characters" will be treated in compliance with the capitalization. That means "A" and "a" are viewed as different characters. If the option is not active, specifying "A" or "a" will lead to the same result.
- Counter Output > Exclusion Criteria > Interpret as Regular Expression: If you activate this option, the specifications from the fields "Only include items starting with these characters", "Only include items ending with these characters" and "Only include items containing these characters" will be treated as regular expressions. This means that you can, for example, use a regular expression such as [A-D] in the fields to include only elements in the list that begin or end with one of the letters A, B, C or D respectively contain at least one of these letters. If this option is not active, the specification of "[A-D]" would lead to only elements in the list that start or end with the string "[A-D]" respectively contain this string as it is.
- Counter Output > Percentages > Calculate percentages on the basis of all items (also the excluded items): In the options, you have many possibilities to exclude characters or other elements from counting. With this option, you can set whether the excluded elements should be considered for the calculation of the percentages on not. If this option is disabled, the percentages are calculated only on the basis of the found characters.
- Counter Output > Percentages > Decimal places used for percentages: At this point, you can define how many decimal places should be used to display the percentages in the result.
