Change Log

On this page, you can find the history of changes made to the program WordCreator.

New Storage Formats for Text Files (2026-07-31): To store the created words and frequency tables, now the following new encodings can be used: LATIN-3 to LATIN-10 (LATIN-1 and LATIN-2 were already available), ISO-8859-5 (Cyrillic), ISO-8859-6 (Arabic), ISO-8859-7 (Greek), ISO-8859-8 (Hebrew), ISO-8859-11 (Thai), WIN-1254 to WIN-1258 (WIN-1250 to WIN-1253 were already available), GB 18030, UCS-2 BE, UCS-2 LE, UTF-1 and UTF-EBCDIC (UTF-7, UTF-8, UTF-16 BE/LE and UTF-32 BE/LE were already available).
Code Page Selection Dialog (2026-07-13): Using the context menu of the code page list (right-click), the names of the selected encodings can now be copied to the clipboard and it is possible to adopt the family, the alphabet, the region, the basis, the ranges and the byte/bit length of the selected encoding as a filter.
Character Map for Encodings (2026-03-27): In the CodePage Selection Window (button "..." next to the code page selection box) as well as via the context menu of the code page selection box (menu item "Character Map"), now a character map of the selected encoding can be displayed, in which the character assignment of this code page can be seen. In addition to displaying the character positions, the character table also allows you to search for characters using their code points or by directly entering the respective character.
Option to control the action when using the tab key (2026-03-14): Use the tabulator key to move from control to control or to enter a tab character into a multi-line text box. If tab input is enabled, you can use CTRL + TAB (instead of just TAB) to jump to the next control.
Language Settings (2026-03-13): Display of the language in the current application language as a mouseover over the language name in the national language.
Code Page Selection Box with Filter Dialog (2026-01-16): In addition to the existing filters, which you can find via the context menu of the selection box for the encoding of text files, there is now also a more extensive selection dialog available that you can access using the new button "..." next to the selection box. In this dialog you will find on the left side the list of the available or filtered code pages with the additional information "Name", "Family", "Alphabet", "Region", "Byte length", "Base/Areas", "Number of characters" as well as "Aliases" (which can also be sorted using the column headers) and on the right there are filters for the name, the family (Windows, Mac, DOS, KOI,...), the alphabet (Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Georgian, Armenian, Thai,...), the region, the byte length (Single Byte 7 Bit / 8 Bit, Multi Byte 2 Byte / 4 Byte / Variable), the base (ASCII, EBCDIC,...), supported codepoint ranges (Basic Latin, Basic Multilingual Plane, Combining Diacritical Marks, Euro Sign...), supported languages, supported characters (including a selection via codepoint ranges) as well as number of characters (min, max; code pages with unoccupied positions; code pages that use all positions). In the options, you can additionaly find a switch with which you can determine whether all code page aliases should be listed individually or whether each encoding should only appear once in the list without showing their alias names.
New Code Page Filter (2026-01-09): Independent of the existing code page filters, you can now also filter for "ASCII-based code pages only", "EBCDIC-based code pages only" or "All code pages". You can find these filter settings also via the context menu if you right-click on the selection box for the encoding.
Case Insensitive Unicode in Regular Expressions (2025-12-24): The usage of regular expressions with the option "Case-Insensitive" (using modifier i or with the option "Match case" disabled) is now also possible with Unicode characters. Previously this only worked with characters from the ASCII range (A-Z / a-z).
Assignment of individual Syllable Frequencies (2025-11-06): The functions for automatically setting multiple syllable frequencies at once, which can be accessed via the context menu of the syllable list, previously always referred to the entire syllable list. Now, it is also possible to assign frequencies to only parts of your list by first marking the respective syllables. If no line in the syllable list is marked when one of the functions is called, the selected frequency will continue to be assigned to all syllables like before.
Assignment of custom Syllable Frequencies (2025-11-03): In the context menu of the syllable list (right mouse button) you will find two new options for automatically assigning syllable frequencies, allowing you to set all syllables to the same or a random user-defined frequency. While with the old functions it was only possible to either set all syllables to a fixed frequency of "1" or to a random frequency between 0 and 999, the new function now shows a dialog on calling the function in which you can define either an arbitrary fixed number (e.g. "10" to assign a fixed frequency of 10) or an arbitrary range (e.g. "1-20" for random frequencies between 1 and 20).
Improved Handling of Multi-Screen High DPI Environments (2025-09-09): Improved handling (saving, loading and positioning) of window size settings (window size and position) on systems with multiple high-DPI monitors of different sizes and resolutions.
Improved Handling of invalid Window Size Settings (2025-09-03): When loading window size settings, now a check is made to see whether the stored window position and window size settings match the current screen size. This prevents the window from being positioned outside the visible area when loading the settings, for example if the settings were saved on a larger screen than the current one.
RTL Layout Adjustments (2025-08-28): Improvements of the graphical user interface of the settings dialog for right-to-left languages.
Code Page Filter (2025-08-05): The list of character encodings in the selection box for the storage format of text files can now - in addition to the sorting - also be filtered. With the new filters "Only 7 Bit Code Pages", "Only 8 Bit Code Pages", "Only Single Byte Code Pages", "Only Multi Byte Code Pages", "Only encodings that support all characters" as well as "All Code Pages" you can limit the selection in the list accordingly. Right-click the selection box to configure the filters.
More Syllables for Syllable Lists from Languages (2025-07-28): Some of the syllable lists from languages stored in the Word Generator have been expanded to include a few additional syllables.
Individual Splash Screen (2025-07-12): The tab "System Integration" of the Settings Dialog (Settings > System Integration) now contains an option to enable and disable the splash screen that appears at program startup.
New Keyboard Shortcuts (2025-05-30): The dialogs "Settings" and "Info" can now be closed using the ESC key.
Dialog for Deleting Settings (2025-04-15): The function "Delete Settings" now displays a dialog in which all startup settings, language settings and other settings files stored on the respective computer are listed and can this way be managed and deleted individually. Previously, when using this function, all files found were deleted directly.
Settings Reset now with Inquiry (2025-03-29): The function "Reset Settings" now only resets the settings after a warning message has been confirmed. Previously an immediate reset took place.
Sorting of Code Pages by Language, Family or Name (2025-03-27): The list of character encodings in the selection box for saving in text formats can now be displayed sorted by the language covered, by the family or by the name of the code page. When sorting by names, the aliases of the encodings are listed additionally. You can find those new options by right-clicking on the respective selection box.
New Letter and Syllable Frequencies (2025-03-23): For generating word, you can now additionally use the letters and syllable frequencies of the following newly added languages: Azerbaijani (Azərbaycanca), Basque (Euskara), Bulgarian (Български), Hungarian (Magyar), Javanese (Basa Jawa), Kazakh (Қазақ), Kyrgyz (Кыргызча), Lithuanian (Lietuvių), Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch), Maltese (Malti), Occitan, Romanian (Română), Serbian (Српски), Slovak (Slovenčina), Slovenian (Slovenščina), Wolof, Yoruba (Yorùbá) as well as Zulu
Open or Copy Links (2025-02-17): All linked websites can now also be opened via the context menu using the right mouse button (item "Open Link") or copied to the clipboard as a URL (item "Copy Link"). Left-clicking on a link will still open it in your default browser as before. Using the context menu and the new copy function, the URL can now also be used for other purposes.
Windows System Integration Unicode Support (2024-12-02): Improved Unicode support for the Windows system integration, for example regarding user names and resulting user directories for storing settings that contain Unicode characters.
Improvement of the Counter (2024-07-27): Faster counting of long texts by using hash tables in the Counter.
Support of Combined Characters in the Counter (2024-07-26): Improved (aggregated) counting of combined characters as a single letter (for example from the Unicode blocks Combining Diacritical Marks, Combining Diacritical Marks Extended or Combining Diacritical Marks Supplement).
Automatic Syllable List (2024-07-23): If no settings for a preferred syllable list are saved, now, the syllable list matching the GUI language will automatically be loaded as the default syllable list.
GUI Improvement (2024-07-22): Sorting and designation of the syllable lists in the menu "Syllable Lists from Languages" according to the GUI language.
New Language (2024-01-27): Български (Bulgarian).
Loading of Files using Drag and Drop (2024-01-10): Syllable lists as well as texts to be counted can now be loaded by simply dragging the corresponding files from any folder onto the WordCreator. Supported are text files.
New Encoding Format (2023-12-31): Code Page 437 (CP437, IBM437, OEM-US) as further encoding for storing the result of the generator or counter in text format.
Window Positioning (2023-11-03): With the new option "Settings > System Integration > Always on Top" you can keep the window of the WordCreator permanently in the foreground above all other program windows.
New Option for the Creator (2023-06-21): Insert line break between the creation passes.
New Option for random Syllable Lists (2023-06-19): Random list of numbers from number X to number Y.
New Keyboard Shortcut for the Creator (2023-06-16): CTRL+N (create new words), CTRL+S (save result), Shift+CTRL+C (copy result to clipboard), CTRL+O (load syllable list) and CTRL+DEL (clear result).
New Keyboard Shortcut for the Counter (2023-06-16): CTRL+N (count current text), CTRL+S (save result), Shift+CTRL+C (copy result to clipboard as text), CTRL+ALT+C (copy result to clipboard as table), Shift+ CTRL+L (use result as syllable list), CTRL+O (load input text for counting), CTRL+W (clear input text) and CTRL+DEL (clear result).
Assignment of Syllable Frequencies (2023-06-13): Via the context menu of the syllable list (click with the right mouse button on the text box), you can now set all syllables of your current syllable list to the same frequency or to random frequencies. This function can also be used if your syllables have not yet been assigned any frequencies. So, with this function it is also possible to generate compliant syllable lists from pure text lists for the WordCreator.
Comments in Syllable Lists (2023-06-11): You can now insert comments into your syllable lists by preceding them with the character #.
New Storage Formats (2023-06-10): The result of the word creation can now, in addition to text files, also be saved in the formats DOCX, ODT and RTF.
Position Storage (2023-06-09): Improved storage of the last window position in environments with more than one monitor.
Size Storage (2023-06-06): Improved storage of the program window size and the program layout under high DPI conditions.
Adjustments of the User Interface (2022-10-22): Adjustments of the program windows and dialogs for an improved display under high-dpi resolution conditions.
Exclusion Criteria for the Counter (2022-07-03): New exclusion criteria for the counter with which it is possible to add only elements to the list that contain certain characters, start with certain characters or end with certain characters. The specification of the characters is also possible as a regular expression.
New Counter Options (2022-03-27): "Count double S instead of capital ß when combining uppercase and lowercase letters (ß -> SS)" and "Always count small ß - also when combining uppercase and lowercase letters".
Settings (2022-01-19): To reduce the size of the settings files, only those settings are stored, which deviate from the default settings.
Font resizing with mouse wheel (2021-06-10): In all multi-line text fields, the font size can now be increased or decreased with the mouse wheel while holding down the CTRL key.
New Program Version (2021-05-05): 64 bit version for Linux as Debian package, RPM package and portable binary.
Language Detection (2021-05-03): Improvement of the automatic language detection of the system language when starting the program.

CSV Export (2021-01-21): In the settings you can now define which characters (field separators, quote characters) are to be used for the CSV export. By default, characters are used according to the local system settings.

File Associations (2016-02-05): Settings (File Extension WCS, Word Creator Settings) can now be linked with the program directly out of the application - Info.
Change of Default Settings (2015-07-07): By default, by now, only single letters are added to the syllable list (no digrams and trigrams). Reason: The long syllables and the field "Length of Words" could lead to confusion when unexpected long words were created. Remedy: You can restore the old behavior in the settings "Syllable List".
New Creator-Option (2015-07-07): The WordCreator now offers the new option "Use every syllable only once per word".
Improvement (2015-05-06): Improved display on High-DPI-Screens. Possibilty to adjust the column width.
Reordering (2015-05-06): Reordering of the counter settings from former 2 tabs ("Counter" and "Counter Output") to 3 tabs ("Counter", "Counter Characters" and "Counter Output") for reasons of clarity.
Enhancement of the Counter (2015-04-16): Option to not reset the counter after countaing, what makes it possible to count several texts together.
Enhancement of the Counter (2015-04-01): You can now use regular expressions to narrow or specialize the text to be counted. In addition, it is possible to display the matches.
New Language (2014-07-14): 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese).
Settings Storage (2014-07-13): Settings can now selectively be saved in a folder provided by the operating system or in the application folder which is increasing portability of the application. More details can be found on the help page about storing settings.
Positions (2014-07-10): It is now possible to determine how many times at which position within a word a character occurs. You can also use the positions for your syllable list to create new words therefrom.
New Languages (2014-05-30): Português do Brasil (Brazilian Portuguese) and Español (Spanish).
Improvement of existing function (2012-01-09): Improvement of the user experience of input boxes, improved feedback and bug fixes.
New Function (2010-08-18): The new function "Font for all Boxes" was added to the settings menu. With this function, it is possible to choose a font for all boxes in the WordCreator with only one click. This is necessary especially when using special uncommon Unicode characters, because it is not possible to display all characters with all fonts. So, you can use a font which can display exactly the characters you are using in your lists or texts.

Note: Minor changes, such as updating an existing program translation or fixing a bug, are typically not included in this list. Therefore, if you find a newer version of the program in the download area than the most recent date in this list, we have typically made such a change to the program.
